Dr. Pankaj Jaiminy - AVP Food, Health & Beauty shares his views on the regulatory parameters of fruit export in different countries
The reasons for European Union (EU) banning the Alphonso and few other vegetables till December 2015 is existence of fruit flies and other quarantine pests in 207 consignments of fruits and vegetables exported from Indian in 2013. These flies and quarantine pets would have posed threat to the biodiversity of the Europe as these are not present in those countries. Every country has its own regulatory conditions and fixed parameters. For example USA has put in place several conditions for mango exporters from India while Japan has different set of conditions. Even though EU has no such condition it is also expects similar standard products. If our farmers, exporters meet those conditions, we will not face this type of situation. Efforts are done at various levels to educate the exporters over these conditions.
